Cats and dogs~

“Cats rule, dogs drool,” meowed Sassy, the cat in Homeward Bound. Sassy was a bit of a prima donna, but despite her annoying prissiness, I agreed with her comment and its implication. Cats are cool.

I’ve had both cats and dogs for pets, but if I had to pick one over the other it would be a cat. Today when I left the house to meet up with my friend Lisa, my cat was snoozing on the couch—food and water in her bowl, litter box clean, ready and waiting. How easy is that?

I picked Lisa up, and after a quick lunch, we planned to wander in the Blue Hills with our cameras, not minding that we’d likely get more exercise than photos on this late November day when the only color was in the sky.

For all the families that came to hike the trails, leaving sleeping cats at home, just as many brought their dogs. All kinds, large and small, mutt or purebred, singles or in pairs, scampered alongside their masters in the unseasonably warm sunshine. It was dog’s day out.

Dogs are like grandchildren. They are adorable, funny, smart, and full of surprises. And if they get a bit carried away with their jumping, and licking, and heavy breathing, well, fine. They don’t live with me. I can go home and relax with my cat. Which is just what I did.

But it did occur to me that dogs make such good companions on days like these, a little friend to share a walk with. It would be nice to have one. But cats are keepers of the hearth, ever ready to curl up on your lap and purr a welcome home. And for me, that’s just a bit nicer.

Maybe I just need a granddog.

Hi there, Ruth!

I love this. I've had mostly dogs in my life (Cailean is #7 ... I almost called him Septimus), but I had my wonderful cat, Pudding, for 19 years.

One can get a small dog to curl up on one's lap at home for hours ... purring in its own way ... But a good deal of exercise MUST come first. Tire the tyke out!

I'm waiting for the weather to ease a bit to take Cailean out today ... Howling gales, sleet and the temperature is dropping still. Supposed to be -5C by evening, snow likely by Wednesday. Neither Cailean nor I like walking about in this weather, even though we both have winter overcoats.

Brilliant idea the "granddog"!

I celebrated "Thanksgiving" this year ... sort of. Happened that 5 of us went off to a country pub, The Cook and Barker, and all ate well ... No sign on the door that it was Thanksgiving, but one felt awfully grateful to be in a warm, charming old inn, and with friends, on a wintry day.

And ... soon ... Christmas.

We woof you a merry ...

I had so much fun on our little adventure yesterday, Ruth! Your pictures of the dogs came out so great (way better than mine)! :-) Talking to the people with their dogs was a big highlight of the day for me.

When I went to facebook today I saw that my brother and his girlfriend are getting a yellow lab puppy. I am so jealous. But they sure do have their work cut out for them!

I'm a cat person, too. I have my grandcat living with me and get to share all the farm cats next door. I like dogs but I love cats!

After having dogs for a quarter century and then cats for five years, I've got to say I like dogs more from a distance. They're wonderful creatures but too needy. Our two cats are clean and quiet, and they allow us to live with them. I like their attitude.

I don't have cats or dogs. The hubster would love to have one but we are just gone way too much. Dogs are pretty cute and snuggly!

One Winter Day in February!

It’s just a week that I have here, doing "farm duty" for friends while they are in Maui avoiding the February weather. Yay them! And yay me too! This is a week of respite...less than half an hour from home and hubby—and cats. I can enjoy the best of both worlds. My “chores” for the week: ·       Gather the chicken eggs (my favorite part!!) ·       Feed the chickens and ducks and give them fresh water (It bothers me that they have to stay in their coop while family is away. Makes sense, but I feel bad. Otherwise, this would be a favorite). ·       Feed three feral cats (my other favorite thing!) ·       Feed four alpacas and give them water (this is becoming a favorite...) Once done, that leaves plenty of time to...           To WHAT, exactly? What DO you do with the free time you’ve always dreamed of having...besides wasting it wondering what you’ll do with all that free time? On day 1, I a

San Antonio and Boston~

I'm in Austin. Two days after Christmas we flew to Texas for another of Worcester State's basketball tournaments. Bruce's motto is, "I didn't miss any of David's games in high school-- and he played three sports-- why start now?" My motto is, "I didn't make all of his games in high school-- nor did I try. The least I can do is go to the ones that require traveling to a place I've never been." David spends his days with the team. When they are not playing or practicing, the coaches take the kids out to see the sights. We have plenty of free time to see the sights and to relax, which is what I'm after, basketball aside. Today we headed 80 miles south to San Antonio and sauntered along the River Walk-- the much corralled and exploited, but nicely so, San Antonio River-- in sun and sixty plus temps. We visited the Alamo, and absorbed a bit of Texas's interesting history and culture. Beautiful! Eye candy! Never ashamed to lug a camera

For Alice~ She's home!!!!!!!

What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us. ~Ralph Waldo Emerson Sometimes it's all about knowing that loved ones and friends stand behind you, knowing that support is there on the down days, the worry days, the days when you feel off-center, out of sync, bedraggled emotionally, and in pain, but knowing all the while that you're not alone. You're not alone... Alice is an online friend--she lives in Hawaii-- who belongs to the writer's workshop that I do. We've only "met" online, but those who have online friendships know that they can be just as strong as those in-person relationships. Alice was hit by a car while walking, and is in the rehab phase of things. She's working to regain mobility after a broken pelvis, a broken arm, and a broken nose. It's scary to realize how, in the blink of an eye, life can lurch and our plans for a time are displaced by survival and healing. We&#
